The U.S. healthcare system is kind of like a bad roommate—messy, expensive, and most are out to get theirs. Costs are spiraling, inefficiencies abound, and everyone’s stuck pointing fingers. But what if the real solution involves something we all instinctively avoid? What if we need to lean in hard on exactly the things we find uncomfortable?
Yeah, I said it. Discomfort. Not exactly what you signed up for, right? But here’s the thing: at TREND Health Partners, we’ve learned that true transformation starts when we stop dodging the awkward, the hard, and the messy. It’s time to stop sweeping the problems under the rug and start facing them head-on. Because guess what? That’s where progress happens.
Why Discomfort Matters
Let’s break it down.
Getting comfortable being uncomfortable means taking a good, hard look at how things are done—and admitting that the easy way isn’t cutting it. For decades, payers and providers have been locked in an arm-wrestling match, each trying to come out on top. But where has that gotten us? We’re spending twice as much as any other developed nation, and our outcomes are disconcerting.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: change isn’t supposed to feel good. It’s supposed to challenge you. It’s supposed to make you rethink your assumptions and try something new. It’s about saying, “Yeah, this feels hard, but it’s the right thing to do.” That’s how we move forward—by leaning into the discomfort, using it as a catalyst for growth, and recognizing that change starts with doing the right thing.
Change Starts with Each of Us Getting Right
We typically start wanting to change the world by impacting others. We do this because, by nature, that is the easiest path, to jump to the end goal. In reality, change actually starts with us. It starts by getting right, ourselves. That is the process of looking in the mirror and understanding our personal purpose or in this case our company’s purpose. Change starts small by impacting our own twenty square feet in a positive way. We need to impact our own twenty square feet before we can start to positively impact others outside that area.
We need to begin the journey of getting right by living with transparency and collaborating with others. Sometimes this means risking being wrong or risking difficult conversations to arrive at the truth. Truth is where true collaboration begins.
A Story About Transparency (And a Little Sweat)
Picture this: we’re pitching clinical review services to a valued health plan client. Now, we could have taken the easy route—fluffed up our numbers, thrown around some jargon, and hoped they didn’t ask too many questions. But we didn’t. We leaned in.
“Look,” we told them, “we’ve got limited experience with clients like yourself. But here’s what we bring to the table: deep provider insight and a unique position in the market. We know how providers think, how they appeal claims, and how they handle denials. We’re not just like every other vendor—we’re different because we approach this with a unique perspective, significant experience, and a commitment to getting claims right.”
Was it a risky move? Sure. Did we sweat through our shirts a little? Absolutely. But you know what happened? The client said, “You’re making me rethink how we approach this.” That’s the power of transparency. When you’re willing to embrace the uncomfortable truth, you open the door to real connection and trust.
After We Get Right, We Can Start Living Right
Living Right is the dedication to purposefulness. This is where life gets interesting, and we can truly collaborate with others to drive positive impact outwardly with purpose. With a laser focus on doing the right thing, we can start to have bigger conversations about solving real problems. As we live right, we begin to accelerate toward purpose through impact.
Are You Part of the Problem—or the Solution?
Here’s the tough question: what energy are you bringing to the table? Are you perpetuating the friction, or are you eliminating it? Are you clinging to the comfort of adversarial models, or are you brave enough to try collaboration? Are you ready to accelerate towards purpose through impact?
If we’re going to fix this system, we need to stop seeing it as a zero-sum game. It’s not about winning or losing—it’s about creating outcomes that work for everyone. That starts with doing the right thing. And yeah, that means some policies, processes, and mindsets are going to have to go. But isn’t that the point?
Leading the Right Path Forward
So, what does embracing discomfort look like in action? It’s about challenging the status quo and making bold moves to redefine how payers and providers work together.
It starts with sharing data. For years, the healthcare system has been siloed, with each side hoarding information like it’s the last cookie in the jar. But real progress demands transparency. By opening up the books and exchanging insights, we can eliminate redundancy, catch inefficiencies, and build trust.
Then comes the hard part: building authentic partnerships. Collaboration doesn’t mean just shaking hands and calling it a day. It means rolling up your sleeves, sitting down with the “other side,” and hammering out solutions that work for everyone—even if it’s uncomfortable. It’s about aligning incentives so that better outcomes for patients also mean better results for organizations.
And let’s not forget about embracing risk. True innovation doesn’t come without its share of failures. At TREND, we’ve learned to see those moments not as setbacks but as stepping stones. Failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s part of the process. By acknowledging the bumps in the road and committing to the journey, we’ve been able to drive change in ways that other organizations only talk about.
Finally, it’s about persistence. Collaboration isn’t a one-time event; it’s a mindset. It’s the daily grind of showing up, having the hard conversations, and pushing forward—because you believe the end result is worth it.
The Challenge for Us is About Leaving a Legacy
This isn’t just a call to action—it’s a dare. A dare to step up and lead. A dare to get uncomfortable in your processes, your decision-making, and your vision for the future. Because here’s the truth: if you’re not willing to get a little uncomfortable, you’re not going to move the needle.
And when you do? That’s when you work towards leaving a legacy. One where the healthcare system isn’t defined by inefficiency and conflict but by collaboration, fairness, and outcomes that actually make sense.
So, what’s it going to be? Are you ready to get comfortable with being uncomfortable and make a difference? It’s time to get after it.
Let’s go!
